Carnival Announces First Roller Coaster At Sea

In recent years, we have seen some truly fantastic activities added to cruise ships for the first time. Norwegian Cruise Line brought us the first go-kart track at sea, Royal Caribbean introduced the first trampoline park at sea and Disney Cruise Line even has a trapdoor water slide on board Disney Dream and Fantasy.

So, you may think that it was only a matter of time before somebody decided (and found a way) to put a roller coaster on a cruise ship. Well, that is exactly what Carnival Cruise Line announced last week when they told everyone that their forthcoming vessel, Carnival Mardi Gras, will feature ‘BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster’.

The ship is due to launch in 2020 and we’re sure to learn much more about its stand-out feature between now and then. At the moment, we know that two riders will sit one in front of the other in a small cart shaped a bit like a motorcycle. Then, whilst enjoying views from 187 feet above sea level, they will be able to control their own speed, reaching peaks of 40 mph. The track will be over 240 metres long and will wrap around the vessel’s funnel. There will also be a camera along the way to tack action shots for the perfect souvenir.

As the first ever ship propelled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to be based in North America, Carnival Mardi Gras will extend its environmentally friendly capabilities by ensuring BOLT is powered by electricity only. Initially, rides will be complimentary for all guests, but Carnival hasn’t ruled out bringing in a fee in order to cope with demand.

So far, we know few other details about Carnival Mardi Gras, other than the fact she will sail from a brand new cruise terminal in Port Canaveral, set to be completed by the end of 2019. Cruisers will definitely be keeping an eye out to see if any more exciting, first-at-sea experiences are announced.
