Will P&O Cruises’ 2022 Ship Be Aimed At Millennials?
We barely know anything about P&O Cruises’ next ship, due to arrive in 2020, but it has already announced that she will have a sister. The company is set to confirm its status as Britain’s favourite cruise line by building the largest ship for the UK market, an accolade presently being held by current flagship Britannia.
Just like the 2020 arrival, the latest ship to be announced will have the capacity for 5,200 guests and weigh 183,900 gross tonnes. This would place both additions joint fourth in the world when it comes to the largest cruise ships at sea. The 2022 ship, for now just known as being part of ‘Project Gala’, will also be powered by LNG engines, helping to continue the move towards more sustainable and green propulsion methods.
One thing that has caught the public’s eye is a comment made by P&O Cruises senior vice president Paul Ludlow in regard to the audience at which the ship could be aimed. Ludlow said “In four years’ time (…), we will see an even greater rise in the popularity of cruising across all demographics and all age ranges including both millennials and Generation Xers”, giving a strong indication that the facilities on board could be directed at a younger audience.
Building work for the first new P&O Cruises ship doesn’t start until the spring, at which time we expect to learn more about the venues and stateroom features that will be found on board. Until then, though, will have to wait in anticipation to see what this new class of ship will bring to this historic fleet.
