The world's largest port of Rotterdam is the perfect starting point for excursions to the cities of Holland. Few cities rebounded as quickly as Rotterdam following the Nazi invasion, which levelled the medieval heart of town, burning down most of it. Today, some of Europe's most bold contemporary architecture can be found amid classic 18th- and 19th-century buildings in this gateway to the Netherlands.

The Seine is regarded as one of the great historic rivers in Europe, flowing 485 miles from Burgundy in a north-westerly direction to Normandy via Paris. It therefore provides an ideal link between the French capital and the sea. Five tributaries feed into the Seine including the Marne, Aube, Loing, Yonne, and Oise, which are in addition to a series of canals which link the Seine to the Loire, Rhine and Rhone rivers.
