The largest of the seven Canary Islands is Tenerife. It is approximately 790 square miles in size and dominated by Mount Teide, which soars to a height of 12,200 ft and is the highest peak on Spanish territory. A cable car provides transportation to the top, for a breathtaking panorama of islands afloat in a blue sea. Called the "Island of Eternal Spring" by the locals, Tenerife offers idyllic weather, fragrant fruit trees and charming locals.
The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is perfect for exploration on foot, with wide avenues, excellent examples of modernist architecture, sophisticated shops, and an oasis of birdsong, fountains, and greenery in the city park.
La Palma is called the Fair Isle because of its fabulous landscape and you will soon see why. Santa Cruz de la Palma is one of the prettiest harbours among the islands and is easily explored on foot.
Lanzarote is a volcanic island, the scenery is lush and fertile; making Fire Mountain and the curious vineyards at Le Geria 'must do' visits. Timanfaya National Park is a vivid volcanic showcase. Here, water poured into boreholes hisses back out as steam and you can feast on specialities cooked by the earth's heat.
Fuerteventura is a paradise for sun worshippers, beach lovers, and water sport enthusiasts. Located just off the coast of Africa, its consistently beautiful weather has people visiting all year round. It's name can be literally translated as 'strong winds', hence the large amount of water sports that can be found at the beaches that encompass the island.
