  12:00am Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dutch engineering-its dams, sea gates, and the 19-mile dyke walling out the Zuider Zee-prevent this low-lying country from being reclaimed by the North Sea. The marsh that originally surrounded Amsterdam has steadily disappeared beneath the expanding city, where many of the buildings are supported by an estimated five million wood caissons driven into the mire. Vibrant, fascinating and always alive, Amsterdam is imbued with the quality the Dutch call "gezelligheid." Explore the city's 700-year-old streets, marvel at its stepped-gable houses, cruise down its bustling canals, and browse its colourful flower markets.

  12:00am Flaam (Flam), Norway
Lying at the head of Aurlandsfjord, this small village of some 400 people is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, isolated farmsteads and waterfalls. Flaam also boasts the extraordinary Flaamsbanen. One of the most dramatic train rides in Europe, the Flaamsbanen takes an hour to cover 12 miles, hugging cliffs, plunging through tunnels and pausing for its passengers to admire the views as it ascends the Flaam Valley to a desolate mountain plateau.

  12:00am Olden, Norway
By the mid-19th century, European travellers were cruising the waters of the Nordfjord and visiting the village of Olden. The Romantic Movement inspired this new taste for dramatic landscape - and Norway had plenty of dramatic landscape. Then as now, travellers were impressed, moved, and not frequently overwhelmed by the stark contrast between peaceful rural farmsteads and a towering wilderness of mountain peaks and glaciers.

Nordfjord, located in western Norway, is astonishingly beautiful and diverse. You’ll find peaceful valleys and well-kept farms, as well as gleaming glaciers, foaming waterfalls, and towering, snow-capped mountains. The mountains plunge from altitudes of a few thousand metres, straight down into the seawater.

The fjord of Geiranger is one of most famous of Norway. Surrounded by mountains reaching over 3,000 feet high, the impressive natural beauty has led some to pronounce it the "most beautiful fjord in the world."   12:00am Geirangerfjord, At Sea, Norway
The fjord is one of Norway's most visited tourist sites. In 2005, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fjord is surrounded by some of the steepest mountains on the entire west coast. It is very narrow and has no habitable shore area, for the precipitous heights rise in sheer and rugged strata almost straight out of the water. Foaming waterfalls plunge into the fjord from jagged peaks.

  12:00am Bergen, Norway
Bergen is called the "Gateway to the Fjords," as it is a great launching point for a tour of nature's Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord. This city has a wonderful mix of architectural styles that add to its 18th-century charm. And as birthplace of virtuoso violinist Ole Bull and pianist Edvard Grieg, Bergen is considered the cultural capital of Norway.
