These Themed Cruises Will Allow You To Indulge Your Passions And Hobbies
Popular in the river cruise sector for many years, there is now a growing trend within ocean cruising for sailings that are themed around a particular thing. From special guests joining the fun to exclusive shore excursions, these itineraries aim to bring like-minded people together in order to celebrate their passion for anything from gardening to dancing. Here are just a few of the exciting options coming up over the next year or so.
The Crossword Crossing – Cunard
This year is the 75th anniversary of the New York Times’ first ever crossword. This popular puzzle has become one of the most important parts of the publication’s pages since 1942 and now it’s your chance to join other puzzlers aboard the Crossword Crossing. Departing from New York on 8th December 2018, the 7-night sailing will include mass solving sessions and the chance to grill crossword creators on just what goes into making these fiendish word games.
Current and former New York Times writers will also be giving presentations on linguistics and the digital version of the puzzles. The cruise finishes in Southampton on 15th December, so it could be a great way to return home in style after a break in New York City.
Star Trek: The Cruise II – Norwegian Cruise Line
Trekkies unite for a themed voyage throughout the Caribbean which brings people together from all over the Gamma Quadrant. There are two different sailings available, departing on the 1st May 2018 and 1st November 2018, each starting and finishing in Miami.
As you visit destinations such as Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in Belize, there will be themed parties, film and TV screenings and scientists attempting to explain the fact within the fiction. This cruise on board Norwegian Jade will be hosted by none other than George Takei and will feature a whole host of Star Trek actors and personalities.
Adventure of Your Life Cruises – Holland America Line
Holland America Line have teamed up with O, The Oprah Magazine to offer four different Adventure of Your Life cruises. It might be too late now to join the first of these, on 29th November 2017, but there are three more taking place in 2018.
Choose from the Caribbean or Alaska, as you join other explorers on board Nieuw Amsterdam or Eurodam for some Oprah-inspired fun. Guest speakers and editors of the magazine will join you to talk about life-enhancing topics such as travel, wellness and fashion.
Chris Jericho’s Rock and Wrestling Rager – Norwegian Cruise Line
If you’ve been looking for a cruise that combines the nostalgia or WWE wrestling with anthems from rock and roll bands, then this is the sailing for you. WWE superstar and front man of Fozzy, Chris Jericho, is hosting his very own cruise from Miami to Nassau from 27th to 31st October 2018 on board Norwegian Jade.
The line-up is jam-packed with wrestlers, musicians, comedians and other entertainers who will keep you rocking through the five days. As well as JR and Jerry the King Lawler, you’ll get to meet Mick Foley, Rey Mysterio, DDP, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat and a whole host of other talent. Plus, there will be a live tournament involving the wrestlers from independent promotion Ring of Honour.
The 80s Cruise – Celebrity Cruises
If you prefer your nostalgia in the form of music then travel back in time aboard this 80s cruise and dance the night away with Rick Springfield, Mike and The Mechanics, Billy Ocean and more. The cruise takes place aboard Celebrity Summit and departs Fort Lauderdale on 17th March 2018.
Over seven nights, you will visit the ports of Nassau, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Cococay in the Bahamas. Entertainment will consist of performances by the above artists but will also include karaoke, 80s TV and film screenings, neon-clad gym sessions, 80s quizzes, 80s arcade games and, of course, 80s themed club nights.
Journey of Genealogy – Cunard
On 4th November 2018, the magnificent Queen Mary 2 will offer a special genealogy-themed cruise from Southampton, across the Atlantic, to New York City. Experts from the website Acestry.com will be on board to explain how you can trace your own family tree, as well as uncovering some secrets relating to the ancestors of guests and crew right there and then. Special guests Mary-Ann Ochota (anthropologist) and Suzannah Lipscomb (historian) will also be giving important insights into the history of mankind in general.
