Our Pick Of Royal Caribbean’s Shore Destinations

Royal Caribbean has recently made it easier to choose which shore excursions you would like to take part in from the fantastic range of options. Having released their new online booklet and launched a dedicated shore excursions website you can now dive deep into the world of land-based activities to find those that are perfect for you and your family.

Specific adventures are organised into categories such as ‘Family Connections’ and ‘Culture and Sights’ and each is labelled mild, moderate or strenuous depending on how active you will be during the excursion. You can also choose the destination which you will be visiting and see all of the options listed in that port.

So let’s take a closer look at some of our favourites from the lengthy list.

Dog Sledding and Glacier Flightseeing by Helicopter

Dog Sledding Alaska

Port: Skagway, Alaska

Type of Excursion: Active Adventures

Activity Level: Moderate

Why We Love It: This shore excursion will get your heart pumping twice as fast with not one but two adrenaline filled activities. First you will be taken from the port to Denver Glacier via a 30-minute helicopter ride. This will give you the chance to take in some of the breathtaking scenery in this part of Alaska, such as lush green forests and snow-tipped mountains. Then, on arrival at the glacier, you will be given a crash course in dog-sledding by a professional musher. Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, you can choose to take the reins or sit back and relax in the sled as the beautiful landscapes flash by.

Save a Sea Turtle Experience

Turtle On Beach In Mexico

Port: Cozumel, Mexico

Type of Excursion: Caring Discoveries

Activity Level: Mild

Why We Love It: Royal Caribbean calls this excursion Cozumel’s best kept secret and it’s easy to see why. Not only do you get to do something that few people will ever get to do, something which is guaranteed to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside, you will also be doing your bit for the natural world. During turtle hatching season, hundreds of turtles break free from their shells and make a mad dash towards the ocean. However, only around 80% of them are developed enough to make this journey successfully and that’s where you come in. On this four-hour excursion you will be helping to rescue some of those that weren’t strong enough to make it, so that they can be nurtured by the Save a Sea Turtle program until they are ready to try again.

Tuscan Cooking Class and Wine Tasting

Tuscan Wine And Pasta

Port: Florence/Pisa (La Spezia) Italy

Type of Excursion: Culinary

Activity Level: Mild

Why We Love It: Even the least informed wine tasters among us will know that the vintages produced in Tuscany are some of the best in the world and this shore excursion gives you the chance to sample some of them. Not only will you get the chance to indulge in a traditional three-course meal accompanied by local wine flights, you will also get hands-on in the kitchen as you produce some authentic pasta. Don’t worry if you don’t know where to start, though, as your tour of the iconic Martelli Pasta factory is sure to give you some helpful hints and tips.

Hidden Jewels of Bangkok

Wat Ratchanadda Bangkok

Port: Bangkok/Laemchabang, Thailand

Type of Excursion: Culture and Sights

Activity Level: Moderate

Why We Love It: Thailand is positively awash with beautiful temples and this activity allows you to see the most stunning examples that Bangkok has to offer. You will travel to Rattanakosin Island in the centre of the city to tour three different temples, including the 118-foot high Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanadda. Your excursion will then conclude with an exciting tuk tuk ride and a traditional Thai lunch.

Brisbane Sights and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Koala Bear

Port: Brisbane, Australia

Type of Excursion: Family Connections

Activity Level: Moderate

Why We Love It:The main reason why we love this excursion so much is that it allows you to see both sides of Brisbane (and even Australia) in one activity. Your day will start with a coach tour of the city’s highlights and stately buildings (showing you the bustling and metropolitan side of the country), before you reach the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and see the more peaceful, natural side of Australia. As well as cuddling the cute koalas, you will also get to meet, and possibly feed, other animals like kangaroos and Tasmanian devils.
