Cruises With Exciting Overnight Stays
Sometimes, particularly on longer cruises, you will get the opportunity to stay in a particular port overnight. Cruise ships usually do their sailing whilst you are sleeping so that you not only have the excitement of waking up to a new destination, but you also get to spend as much time as possible in that place. However, when a ship docks overnight you get even more time to explore the local sights and sounds.
Additionally, overnight stays allow you to see another side of the city. As the sun goes down and the lights come up, the scenery can change and offer a whole new world to discover. Let’s take a look at a few cruises with interesting overnight stays.
Pacific Islands, Australasia & Far East – P&O Cruises
This mammoth 42 night cruise from P&O Cruises departs on the 8th of February 2016 and has not one, not two, but three overnight stays built into the itinerary. The three ports you will sleep in are not just your run-of-the-mill destinations either, as you will get the chance to see the sun set and rise again on Easter Island, in Sydney and in Xingang, the gateway to the Chinese capital of Beijing.
Possibly the most intriguing of these places is Easter Island, as few people ever get to set foot here in their life time. Named after the time of year at which it was discovered, Easter Island is famous for the Moai statues that stand ominously along its coast line. Also, an overnight stay in Xingang during your Pacific cruise will give you more time to discover the Great Wall, Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square and so much more.
Baltic Capital Cities Cruise – Celebrity Cruises
This Baltic Capitals itinerary is actually Celebrity Cruises’ annual President Cruise for 2016. As the operator welcomes their new President, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, guests can enjoy some of the premier sights in Northern Europe. Departing on the 7th of June 2016, you will sail from Amsterdam on a 12-night trip that includes an overnight stay in Copenhagen and two nights in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg.
Your time in the Danish capital can be spent uncovering the sights on foot or, if you really want to see as much as possible, on two wheels. As night falls, you will be able to take part in Copenhagen’s café culture. Meanwhile, almost three full days in St. Petersburg will allow you to see some of the rich culture the city has to offer, as well as taking a trip to Moscow to immerse yourself even further into the Russian way of life.
New England and Canada – Cunard
As you sail from New York on the iconic Queen Mary 2, you will dock in many of the major towns and cities on the American and Canadian east coast. As well as visits to Boston, Newport and Halifax, your cruise will include two overnight stays in Quebec City.
This will give you plenty of time to either explore on your own or take part in some of Cunard’s shore excursions. These include getting around the city by foot, by horse and cart and via funicular railway. However, be sure to leave enough time to sample some of the city’s maple taffy and pancakes. The cruise departs on the 27th of September 2015 and there are also options that include a one or two-way transatlantic crossing.
Islands of the Adriatic with Venice – Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
This 25-night cruise from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines takes in many gems along the Dalmatian coast. You will stop in destinations such as Split, Dubrovnik and Kotor during a cruise which sails from Liverpool on the 6th of June 2016.
However, it is the port of Venice which will host you for your overnight stay. There is so much to see in this famous city that you will be glad of the extra time to explore. Take advantage of the long day to wander around the endless piazzas, work your way through the maze of bridges and cobbled streets, and take part in one or two of Venice’s famous activities. Gondola’s, gelato and galleries await in abundance.
