A Splendid Ship You Should MS-See For Yourself
Last week, we were lucky enough to travel down to Southampton for the day and step aboard MSC Splendida. Before we were given the grand tour, we knew very little about the ship but our eyes have been opened to sailing on this fantastic vessel and the Italian cruise line.
The first thing we noticed as we arrived at the port, bathed in glorious sunshine which had obviously been borrowed from the country in which MSC Cruises was founded, was the size of the ship. MSC Spendida has the capacity for 4,363 passengers yet, for some reason, we were expecting something smaller. She is a Fantasia class vessel (the largest class the cruise line currently has) and is part of a fleet that will reach 14 when MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside make their debuts next year.
So, without further ado we swapped our passports for ship passes and headed aboard. Here are a few areas we especially enjoyed.
The Yacht Club
The concept of a ship within a ship is becoming more and more popular, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Haven being the perfect example, and it’s easy to see why MSC’s offering is very popular with guests looking to sail in luxury. The Yacht Club is an exclusive area where you will find everything you need during your holiday, away from the busy public spaces elsewhere on the ship.
There’s a secluded swimming pool, a dedicated restaurant, a panoramic viewing lounge and excellent spa facilities. You will also have your own butler available 24 hours a day and be able to summon a lift much quicker by scanning your key card and receiving a priority service to your chosen floor. One slight down side, however, is that although Yacht Club guests can enjoy inclusive beverages within this luxurious part of the ship, any bought outside of the Yacht Club are chargeable.
F1 Experience and 4D Cinema
Cruise lines seem to always be in competition with each other to see who can put the most extraordinary activities on board there ships and the Splendida’s F1 simulator is certainly up there with the top contenders. Guests can take a seat in a full-sized Formula One car and test themselves on a chosen track which appears on the screen in front. Next door is the equally exciting 4D cinema, equipped with large seats that have surprises up their sleeves to add an extra dimension to your viewing.
If you are even a little bit sports mad, you will love the Sports Bar found midship on deck seven. With football shirts and other memorabilia dotted everywhere and large flat screen TVs filling all of the other wall space, it’s the perfect place to watch whichever sporting events you are passionate about. A two-lane bowling alley means that you don’t have to just watch the action, you can make your own too, and the snack bar will keep you refuelled from kick-off to full-time.
La Piazzetta ensures that wherever you are in the world you can enjoy a slice of Italy. And this can quite literally be a ‘slice’ if you choose to indulge in one of the tempting cake and chocolate options behind the glass counter. The area resembles an outdoor restaurant positioned on a bustling piazza, yet it is indoors and covered by a starry sky like the one found in Cesar’s Palace, Las Vegas. There are fountains and Roman columns to set the scene and it would be the perfect place to catch up with a coffee and sweet treat.
All in all, Splendida had some wonderful areas in which to relax, such as the main pool deck or the Aurea Spa, as well as those where you can enjoy some great entertainment – the giant Strand Theatre offering nightly highlights.
