4 Massive Events To Cruise To In 2018
2018 is set to be a big year for many different reasons. Not only is there a whole host of new ships on the way, there are also some fantastic events happening around the world that shouldn’t be missed. Here are a few 2018 cruises that will take you right into the heart of the celebrations.
300th Birthday Of New Orleans
New Orleans is one of the most diverse, multi-cultural and quirky cities in the world and 2018 will see it mark its 300th birthday in style. Having been founded in 1718, the city has been through a lot over the last three centuries, but this has brought the people together and created a modern melting pot of music, entertainment and culture that attracts people from all over the world.
The celebrations will take place all year, with concerts, special events and fireworks displays on offer. However, the most enthusiastic festivities are likely to be saved for an extended Mardi Gras. With this in mind, the period from 9th - 13th February is a great time to visit. For example, Norwegian Cruise Lines has a sailing on board Norwegian Pearl that departs New Orleans on 13th February – perfect timing.
Baltic States 100 Years Of Independence
2018 is an important year in the history of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia as it marks 100 years since they gained independence from the Russian Empire. Though the countries are coming together to celebrate this momentous occasion, events will take place over different periods depending on which country you visit. Celebrations have already started and a range of exciting activities, which focus on history and how the youth of the nations will take things forward, is set to run until 2021.
This all means that the cruise ports of Tallinn, Estonia; Klaipeda, Lithuania; and Riga, Latvia are a great choice for next year. Whilst events will be constantly taking place, the official birthdays for each nation are as follows. Estonia - 24th February 2018, Latvia – 18th November 2018, and Lithuania – 16th February 2018.
World Cup In Russia
Anticipation is growing for the next football World Cup, to be held in Russia between June 14th and July 15th 2018. With many of the key matches taking place in St Petersburg and Moscow, it’s easy to combine a trip to the match with a relaxing Baltic Cruise.
Two cruise lines in particular have already announced special sailings that will allow you to do that. Azamara Club Cruises has a 12-night Baltic & World Cup Voyage which sails from Greenwich to Stockholm and Celebrity Cruises has a Signature Event Sailing departing Southampton on 7th July 2018. Both itineraries will feature shore excursions that give you the opportunity to buy tickets for games including, in Celebrity’s case, the semi-final and final.
Nelson Mandela’s 100th Birthday
No one man did more for the country of South Africa than Nelson Mandela. He became a symbol of freedom, peace and togetherness around the world and helped to shape how his home country looks today. 2018 will see many events being held throughout the year to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of the great man, but they will culminate on 18th July – a day known to all as Mandela Day.
South Africa is a fantastic destination to visit at any time, but this historic occasion gives you the perfect excuse to learn about the history of the Rainbow Nation with a cruise to Cape Town, Durban or Port Elizabeth.
