3 Free Things To Do In Cape Town
The diverse destination of Cape Town has so much to offer any one on a cruise to South Africa. Here are some fantastic free ways to discover the area.

Our ‘3 Free Thing To Do’ series provides some great suggestions for fun things to do when your ship calls into port that won’t cost a penny. That way, you can save your hard-earned spending money for some onboard fun or any exciting excursions you’ve earmarked in another city.

The diverse destination of Cape Town has so much to offer any one on a cruise to South Africa. From wildlife encounters to thrill-seeking activities and thought-provoking learning experiences, the Rainbow Nation’s legislative capital caters to all visitors superbly. Here are some fantastic free ways to discover the area.

For The Nature Lover…

South Africa is one of the world’s premier destinations for safaris and holidays amongst nature. Whilst Cape Town cannot offer the chance to spot wild game (unless you count the penguins of Boulders Beach), it can provide many beautiful places to enjoy the natural surroundings. From brisk hikes up Table Mountain or Lion’s Head to leisurely strolls around Green Point Park, there are options to suit every level of activity.

One of the best places for a romantic walk, and maybe a picnic, is The Company’s Garden in the city centre. A brief escape from urban surroundings, this patch of greenery is full of monuments, restaurants, shaded spots and free-roaming squirrels.

For The Wine Lover…

South Africa is known as one of the best wine-growing regions in the world, with crisp Sauvignon Blancs and light Shirazs being drunk around the planet. Therefore, if you enjoy a glass of wine or two, you cannot leave Cape Town without sampling some of the local vintages.

Luckily, this can be done at a few spots around the city without spending anything. Wine Concepts has stores on both Kloof Street and Newlands Street and, by partnering with local vineyards, is able to offer free tastings every day of the week (except Sundays when the stores are closed). Arrive between 4pm and 7pm Monday to Friday or 12pm and 3pm on Saturday to see what they have open.

For The Art Lover…

Such a diverse melting pot of culture is always likely to result in a thriving art scene and that is definitely an understatement when talking about Cape Town. Many museums and galleries charge an entrance fee but there are some great places that allow you to discover masterpieces without parting with any cash.

One such place is the Whatiftheworld Gallery in the cool district of Woodstock. Here, the work of contemporary artists is showcased and collectors often arrive in search of the next big thing. Plus, if you are a fan of street art, just walking around the streets of Woodstock will enable you to admire a wide range of murals.

Your time in Cape Town is likely to be short, so hopefully some of these free activities will help you make the most of it. Don’t forget to check out some of the other things available, though. They may not be free but they’re definitely worth it.
